Phil Bennett Death From An Illness As Twitter Floods With Tribute Post

Former fly-half for Wales and the British and Irish Lions Phil Bennett has died at the age of 73, according to his former team Scarlets.

Bennett was praised as "one of the all-time legends of the rugby and widely considered as the best player to wear the Scarlets jersey by Scarlets in a statement confirming the sad news of his passing.

Delme Thomas, Bennett's former Scarlets captain, and Wales and Lions teammate, paid homage to Bennett, saying, He was the best fly-half I have ever seen on a rugby field.

We are devastated by this news, said Scarlet's chairman Simon Muderack. Phil Bennett's name is mentioned everywhere the Scarlets go throughout the world.

Nancy Bennett, the wife of Kansas State defensive coordinator Phil Bennett, died Saturday as a result of injuries she received two weeks ago while jogging during a strong thunderstorm. She was 41 years old at the time.

Bennett had been unconscious since being injured on August 11 and has been in intensive care at Mercy Hospital.

She leaves behind two young children, Sam, 11, and Maddie, 8, in addition to her husband.

Bennett was struck by lightning on the Kansas State University campus while working as a registered nurse and accompanying her husband to various coaching assignments. Bennett went to the scene as his wife was being loaded into an ambulance, concerned that she was out in the rain.

According to many famous birthday websites, Phil is one of the wealthiest rugby union players and is among the most popular. and has an estimated net worth of $1.5 million.

Many accolades have already poured in, many hailing his undeniable skill in the industry, but Bennett also left an indelible mark outside of it.

His locker room speech before a match against arch-rivals England at Cardiff Arms Park in 1977 has become part of Welsh sporting legend.
