Will Matheus Nunes Agree On '£38M Deal' With Liverpool Premier League Rivals?

Wolves agree to a club-record £42.2 million deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes.

Personal details have still to be agreed upon with Nunes. But Wolves aim to get him registered by midday on Friday in enough for him to play against Tottenham on Saturday.

The proposed £42.2m deal would exceed the £35m Wolves paid Porto two years ago for attacker Fabio Silva, who is now on loan at Belgian club Anderlecht.

West Ham was also interested in Nunes this summer, but Hammers manager David Moyes admitted last week that "the player didn't want to come."

According to News, West Ham United was prepared to triple the annual pay of Sporting CP midfielder in order to complete a deal.

The Portuguese daily said in its print version that a £1 million yearly salary was on the table, but it did not impress the Brazilian.

Nunes is likely to become Wolves' third summer signing after the additions of Valencian attacker Goncalo Guedes and Burnley defender Nathan Collins.

Matheus Nunes Career

Matheus Nunes began his football career with the local club Ericeirense. He made his senior debut for Ericeirense in the Lisbon Football Association during the 2015-16 season.

He began the 2017 preseason on trial with Oriental but was not signed due to a thigh injury and returned to his previous team.

1. Estoril

Matheus Nunes joined Estoril in the summer of 2018. He made his LigaPro debut on 14 October in a 2-2 tie against Varzim.

Unfortunately, he had to depart because of an injury just before halftime. He spent most of his time with the reserve team.

2. Sporting Clube de Portugal

Nunes signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Sporting CP of the Primeira Liga on January 29, 2019, for a €500,000 fee.

The sporting scouting staff saw his achievements for Estoril against Sporting in the Taça da Liga group stage in the 2018-19 season and decided to sign him.

On October 23, he agreed to an additional year's contract extension, raising his buyout clause from €45 million to €60 million. The club agreed to pay Estoril €450,000 for the other half of his economic rights.

On 2 January 2021, Nunes scored his first goal in the Portuguese top flight, capping a 2-0 home victory over Braga. His second occurred the following day, 1 February, when he scored in injury time to help the hosts overcome Benfica 1-0 in the Derby de Lisboa.

It also earned him man-of-the-match honors.
