Governor Greg Abbott was paralyzed below the waist in an incident when an oak tree fell on him on July 14, 1984, while he was jogging following a storm.
Due to the oak tree falling on him, he was rushed to the hospital, where it was discovered that several vertebrae had been crushed, splintering into his spinal cord.
Similarly, he had broken ribs and damaged his vital organs. Due to his damage to the spinal cords, steel rods were implanted in his spine.
He underwent extensive rehabilitation at TIRR Memorial Hermann to improve his condition. The incident damaged his vertebrae and spinal cord, which left him paralyzed. He uses a wheelchair for his movement.
