Since October 2016, the journalist has been working as a senior economic and business correspondent for NBC News, best known for his work on CNN as Chief Business Correspondent, anchor of Your Money, and a co-host of CNN International's weekday business show World Business Today.

Ali was born on October 29, 1968, in Nairobi, Kenya, to his Ismaili Muslim parents of Gujarati Indian descent.
His parents operated a bakery in South Africa but moved to Kenya in 1960 when Apartheid became oppressive. Later his parents owned a chain of travel agencies in Toronto.
Ali's father, Murad Velshi, was the first Canadian of Indian origin elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, and his mother, Mila, grew up in South Africa.
The journalist earned a degree in religious studies from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where he was the recipient of the Queen's University Alumni Achievement Award and was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws by his alma mater in 2016.
