What Illness Does Anett Kontaveit Have?

Estonian tennis player Anett Kontaveit is not currently sick but is dealing with the after-effects of the COVID-19 virus.

A tweet by sports journalist James Gray on June 17, 2022, revealed that the player had pulled out of Eastbourne International due to the after-effects of COVID.

Kontaveitt herself had revealed earlier in May that she had coronavirus after Stuttgart.

The player ended up skipping both the Berlin and Eastbourne tournaments as she hadn't fully recovered.

Kontaveitt skipping both these tournaments worried her fans because skipping these tournaments meant Kontaveit wouldn't play any warm-up tournaments before Wimbledon Championships.

Last year, Kontaveit achieved her best result in Eastbourne last year when she made the final, although she lost to Jelena Ostapenko.

Sadly, the fans in Eastbourne will miss out on such a performance again from Kontaveitt until next year.

This bad news came at the heels of Kontaveit releasing a statement that she would be splitting with her coach Dmitry Tursunov. The split came about due to traveling difficulties of people holding Russian citizenship.

Fans worried about Kontaveitt's future because of all the unforeseeable difficulties that she had been facing.

How Is Anett Kontaveit's Health Condition?

Estonian player Anett Kontaveit is doing well now that she has gotten over the after-effects of her COVID-19 sickness.

She played as the second seed at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships.

Kontaveit defeated Croatian-born American player Bernarda Pera in the first round of the Championships but lost to German player Jule Niemeier in the second round.

After Wimbledon, the Estonian player received a wildcard entry into the 2022 Hamburg European Open, where she reached the quarterfinals after playing and defeating Romanian player Irina Bara and Swedish player Rebecca Peterson.

Following these matches, Kontaveit reached the semi-finals after German player Andrea Petkovic, who she was supposed to play against, retired from the quarterfinals 0-6, 0-2 down.

The Estonian player beat Russian player Anastasia Potapova to reach her third final of the 2022 season, the first since February but lost to Bernarda Pera, 2-6, 4-6.

Most recently, Kontaveit played at the 2022 US Open in the Women's singles, where she came in as the second seed and had a very easy match with Romanian player Jaqueline Cristian 6-3, 6-0 in the first round.

Kontaveit would lose in the second round to 23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams.

What Happened To Anett Kontaveit?

Anna Kontaveit's loss to Serena Williams completed her subpar 2022 grand slam record.

The Estonian never made it past the second round the entire season. Outside of the grand slams, Kontaveit has had a rollercoaster of a year so far.

A perfect example of Kontaveit's rollercoaster of a 2022 season would be the 2022 French Open.

As the fifth seed at the French Open, Kontaveit lost to Croatian-Australian player Ajila Tomljanovic in the first round, yet she still managed to reach a career-high ranking of world number 2 on June 6, 2022.

Anett Kontaveitt has had a very tumultuous 2022. From reaching number 2 to never passing the third round of any Grand Slam

The main reason why Kontaveit's season went awry is definitely due to the after effects of her coronavirus infection.

Because of her illness, the Estonian player had to miss many tournaments like Berlin and Eastbourne, and even when she started to participate in Wimbledon and the US Open, the player could not perform at her top form.

Another reason her game has suffered is that she let her long-time coach, Dmitry Tursunov, go due to travel restrictions and is currently working with a new coach, German Torben Beltz.

As she still is world number 2, Kontaveit's game hasn't suffered too much but here's to hoping her future is brighter.
