Cherry was born Neneh Mariann Karlsson in Stockholm, Sweden as the daughter of Swedish painter and textile artist Monika "Moki" Karlsson (1943-2009), and musician Ahmadu Jah (1936-2018).
She began her singing career in the early 1980s in London, where she was a member of several punk bands, including The Slits and Rip Rig + Panic.
Before rising to fame, the singer used to go solo rapping in London nightclubs. Her debut album, Raw Like Sushi garnered all the attention towards her, lifting her to a notable singer.
Similarly, she famously sang her song Buffalo Stance on Top of the Pops in December 1988. At that time, she was heavily pregnant with her baby Tyson.
In 1990, the singer was nominated for Grammy Award in the category of Best New Artist, however, she lost it to Milli Vanilli.
Regarding her married life, she briefly married Bruce Smith in 1983, separating from him a year later.
Then in 1990, Cherry exchanged her wedding vows with her now-husband, Cameron McVey. Neneh is a mother of three children, Mabel, Tyson McVey, and Naima Karlsson.
