Being an Orthodox Jew his whole life, he admitted that it would have been tough to play in a Division I College staying an Orthodox Jew. 

Having initially gotten scholarship offers from major universities, Turell chose Yeshiva University so that he can set the pathway for many Jewish kids with the same dilemma of whether or not they can succeed in the Jewish University.

Ryan Turell was born in a Jewish family. His parents, Brad and Laurel Turell, are Sabbath-observing Orthodox Jews belonging to the Shaare Zedek Congregation.

Brad Turell is a corporate communications executive. He was also a basketball player in his college days and averaged 1.8 points per game as a guard for UC Santa Barbara in the 1970s.

Likewise, Laurel is a personal trainer. She appeared in some Jane Fonda exercise videos in the 1980s. She is the daughter of Southern Baptist evangelical singers.

Ryan Turell is an American basketball player with Israeli roots. He was born in Los Angeles, California.

Turell is also eyeing playing in Israel if not selected in the NBA Draft. He has mentioned that his dream is to play in Israel after his career in the NBA.

The 6'7" Yeshiva University player has two siblings. He has a brother Jack and a sister Austin. Though a long shot for a Division III player to be selected in the NBA Draft, Ryan can be the first to be an NBA player in his community.
