Turell has always openly spoken about his religion and often wears a yarmulke on the court. He has mentioned in interviews that he always wants to stay true to his religion. Being an Orthodox Jew his whole life, he admitted that it would have been tough to play in a Division I College staying an Orthodox Jew. 

Having initially gotten scholarship offers from major universities, Turell chose Yeshiva University so that he can set the pathway for many Jewish kids with the same dilemma of whether or not they can succeed in the Jewish University.
