Kwasi Kwarteng is a British politician who is currently serving as a Conservative party politician.

He has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Spelthorne in northern Surrey since May 2010. he served as Liz Truss's Chancellor of the Exchequer and Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy Between September and October 2022.

Kwarteng, whose parents immigrated from Ghana, was born in London and received his education at Trinity College, Cambridge, and Eton College. He worked as a financial analyst and a columnist for The Daily Telegraph Before putting himself forward for election to the House of Commons.

He was named Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth and attended Cabinet in July 2019, following Boris Johnson's election as Conservative Party leader and subsequent Prime Minister. Kwarteng was elected Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy in January 2021.

Following Johnson's resignation in 2022, he backed Liz Truss' campaign for Conservative Party leader. Kwarteng was named Chancellor of the Exchequer after Truss was chosen as Prime Minister. He was appointed, becoming the first person of colour to hold the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer.

He issued a "mini-budget" on September 23 that included a number of tax cuts, which received harsh criticism and briefly led the value of sterling against the US dollar to drop to its all-time low. The second-shortest Chancellor post-war, he was removed from office on October 14 after 38 days in office.

In January 2010, Kwarteng was chosen to represent the Conservatives in Spelthorne. With a margin of 10,019 votes (21.2%), Kwarteng won the seat. He did not vote on the EU Referendum Bill from the backbench in October 2011. 

He is also an author who has written multiple books in his life. He wrote a book in 2014 titled War and Gold: A Five-Hundred-Year History of Empires, Adventures, and Debt. It is a story about capital and how persistently speculative money may bring down entire societies.

His second book, Thatcher's Trial: Six Months That Defined a Leader, was released in 2015. With a larger margin of 14,152 votes, Kwarteng won reelection in the general election of 2015.

He was chosen to serve as Philip Hammond's Parliamentary Private Secretary after the 2017 general election. Suella Braverman was succeeded as a minister in the Department for Exiting the EU by Kwarteng on November 16.

He backed Boris Johnson in the 2019 contest for the leadership of the Conservative Party. He was named Minister of State in the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy on July 25, 2019, alongside Jo Johnson following Johnson's victory. On the same day, he was also made a member of the Privy Council.

He took over for Alok Sharma as Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy on January 8, 2021, as part of a minor reorganization. He promised to reduce world emissions to halt climate change.

He served as Chancellor for just 38 days until being fired on October 14. After Iain Macleod, who passed only a month after taking office, he had the second-shortest tenure of any Chancellor.

Jeremy Hunt succeeded Kwarteng. On October 18, 2022, He was named Second Lord of the Treasury despite having already been removed from his position as Chancellor.

He is a member of the Free Enterprise Group and is regarded as belonging to the right wing of the Conservative Party.

Akwasi Addo Alfred Kwarteng is his full name. Charlotte Boaitey-Kwarteng is his mother, and Alfred K. Kwarteng is his father. In the 1960s, they left Ghana as students. Both his mother and father work for the Commonwealth Secretariat as economists. His mother is a barrister.

He began his education at a Waltham Forest public elementary school before enrolling in Colet Court, an exclusive prep school, where he graduated in 1988 with the Harrow History Prize.

He later enrolled in Eton College, where he received the Newcastle Scholarship award and was a King's Scholar. He graduated from Trinity College in 1993. He earned two first-class degrees, twice took home the Browne Medal, and earned two first-class degrees overall.

He was a member of the group that prevailed on the 1995 season of the BBC game show University Challenge. He participated in the University Pitt Club while attending Cambridge and has since visited again. At Harvard University, he spent a year as a Kennedy Scholar before completing his Ph.D.
