Bass temporarily worked at Prudential Securities from 1992 to 1994 before starting Hayman Capital Management in 2005. He then joined Bear Stearns in 1994.

He advanced quickly through the Bear Stearns ranks, and by age 28, he was one of the youngest senior managing directors in the company's history.

He provided unusual situation investment strategy advice to institutional clients at Legg Mason, including hedge funds.

He left Legg Mason in December 2005 after the division of the company where he worked was sold.

With $33 million in assets under management when he started Hayman Capital Management, L.P., Bass had $5 million of his own money and the remaining $19 million from outside investors.

One of the few investors to correctly foresee and profit from the subprime mortgage crisis, Bass became convinced that there was a residential real estate bubble in the United States not long after starting the hedge fund in February 2006. This earned him notoriety in the financial services sector.

Bass provided testimony before the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission in 2010. Throughout his testimony, he discussed his view of the elements that led to the crisis.
