Theranos Partnership With Jay Rosen of Walgreens Explained

The partnership between Theranos and Walgreens began when Jay Rosen met Elizabeth Homes during health technology conferences in 2010. Soon after the conference, both companies began discussing a possible collaboration.

To decide on the partnership, Walgreens hired Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University to evaluate Theranos' technology. Although Ms. Holmes and former Theranos President Sunny Balwani promised to give Johns Hopkins one of their testing machines, they never sent it.

Later, Dr. Rosan received a prototype along with test kits. Unfortunately, the prototype generated qualitative outcomes, such as "high" or "low," rather than numeric data, making it impossible to compare to other commercial options.

Many competitors were eyeing to partner with Theranos. Thus, because of a fear that they may sign a deal with other companies, Walgreens proceeded with an original arrangement out of worry.

Walgreens executives and advisors visited Theranos' offices in 2011 to inspect the labs. According to the claims, they were accompanied throughout the tour, even to the bathrooms, but they were not permitted access to the labs.

They ended up binding themselves in the deal, but it has sued Theranos ever since the controversy went public.
