Gregory Efthimios Louganis is an Olympic diver, author, and LGBT activist born on January 29, 1960, in El Cajon, California, U.S. He is 62.

Greg Louganis Accident: Injury And Health

Greg Louganis was injured in an accident in Seoul as his head collided with a diving board. He contracted the AIDS virus in South Korea. He was severely hurt and even bled into the water when he banged his head.

Louganis won gold medals in the 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform events at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. During the springboard competition at the Seoul Olympics in 1988, he struck the back of his head on the diving board and needed numerous stitches.

Nevertheless, the Athlete finished his dives and took first place the next day. It was the first time a man diver had won both events in back-to-back Olympics when he took gold in the 10-meter platform the following week. He resigned after those competitions, winning 47 nationals and 13 international titles.

Louganis made his public announcements of being gay and his AIDS diagnosis in 1994 and 1995, respectively. Breaking the Surface is his autobiography which was released in 1995. Louganis was honored by being inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1993.

Louganis continues to exercise, including doing yoga, and is in good health. But, he has essentially given up diving and admitted to a Knight-Ridder reporter in July 2002 that he hadn't dived in eight or nine years.

Louganis said, "I was thinking, Well, I'm going to pack my things, go home, lock myself in my house, and wait to die," six months before the Olympic Games. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, if they had known I had HIV, they would never have let me into the nation."

Greg said, "However, my doctor urged me to continue my Olympic training since it would be best for my health. Focusing on diving was much more constructive. I suffered from depression; I couldn't even get out of bed on days off. Just the blankets would go over my head. But I always showed up when I committed the schedule."
