Is Wayne Parnell Muslim?
After a time of personal study and thought, South African fast bowler Wayne Parnell converted to Islam and will celebrate his 22nd birthday as a Muslim on Friday according to NDTV website.
In a statement released on Thursday, Parnell acknowledged that he converted to Islam in January and is considering changing his name to Waleed, which means Newborn Son. Parnell's Muslim teammates Hashim Amla and Imran Tahir, according to Proteas team manager Mohamed Moosajee, had no influence on his choice to convert from Christianity.
Fellow players, who asked not to be identified, said they believed Parnell was serious about his religion and that he had not consumed any alcohol, which is prohibited for Muslims, since the recent Indian Premier League series.
The players backed Moosajee's denial of Amla's influence, saying he had never tried to convert them to his religion, despite the fact that they were all impressed by Amla's discipline and strict adherence to his religion, refusing to partake in any celebrations with them that involved alcohol and remaining steadfast in his daily prayers even while on tour.
