Afeni Shakur

Tupac Dear Mama documentary explores the relationship between Tupac and his mother Afeni Shakur. Afeni is a prominent political activist from the 90s.

On 10th January 1947, Afeni was born Alice Faye Williams in Lumberton, North Carolina, U.S. She breathed her last on 2nd of May 2016, at 69.

Sekyiwa Shakur and Tupac were her 2 children. In her lifetime, Tupac's mom married three men named Lumumba Shakur, Mutulu Shakur, and Gust Davis.

Alice attended the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan but dropped out before graduation. At age of 21, she became a part of the 'Black' Panther Party, established by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale.

Because Williams was proactively working for the party, she went to jail as well. In 1971, she resigned from the political party.

The Docuseries portrays the Complex relationship between Tupac and Afeni

Alice and her son Tupac did not have a conventional mother-son relationship. She had a drug addiction problem, which worsened the bond with her son, so much so that Tupac moved out in 1989.

As it is said 'blood is thicker than water', Tupac loved his mom, and so did she. When the rap legend published it as a song from his third album 'Me Against the World' in 1995, it was an emotional moment for Afeni.

The lyrics 'When I was young, me and my mama had beef' from the song imply that he did not have the smoothest relationship with his mother.

But, as time passed, the rapper understood his mom's perspective, and his respect for her increased, as the lyrics go 'A poor single mother on welfare, tell me how you did it'.

Williams raised her son in poverty as a single parent while going through substance abuse. It is only obvious that Tupac grew up in a complicated household.

Nonetheless, both Shakur and his mama may be a star in the sky, but both of them are alive and remembered through his songs and lyricism.

The creator of the musical biopic Allen Hughes was about to name the show 'Outlaw', but decided to use one of the titles of Shakur's song, and named it.
