76-year-old Brian Turner was born in Halifax, West Riding of Yorkshire on May 7, 1946.
According to the chef, his mentor during his early career was the food writer and broadcaster Michael Smith.
Besides training with Smith, Turner trained at various hotels and restaurants like Simpson's in the Strand, and the Savoy Grill.
He trained under Richard Sheperd at both locations.
After his training with Sheperd, the chef went to Beau Rivage Palace in Lausanne, which is the capital and largest city of Vaud, one of the cantons of the Swiss confederation.
He then returned to Britain to work at Claridge's and then the Capital Hotel in 1971.
This year is significant because this was the year that both Turner and Richard Sheperd earned a Michelin Star.
In 1973, Turner took some time off to work as a Chef Lecturer. He returned to the chef business to take over as Chef de Cuisine in 1975 after Sheperd left.
Turner then launched the Greenhouse Restaurant and the Metro Wine Bar. Among the chefs who worked with Truner at the Capital were famed chefs Gary Rhodes and Shaun Hill.
With over a decade's worth of experience under his belt, Turner opened his restaurant called Turner's on Walton Street, Knightsbridge, London in 1986.
He ran this restaurant until 2001 when he sold it, and opened another restaurant called Brian Turner's Restaurant.
Brian Turner's Restaurant opened at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Birmingham's NEC in February 2002.
The next year, he opened another restaurant called Brian Turner Mayfair at the Millennium Hotel in London on April 2003.
The mid-2000s were a lucrative time for Brian Truner as he opened another restaurant called Turner's Grill at the Copthorne Hotel Slough-Windsor.
Of these three restaurants, the Brian Turner Mayfair has since closed and did so at the end of July 2008. It has since been replaced by an Italian restaurant unconnected to Turner.
Outside of restaurants, Turner also invented the Brian Turner - S & C, a snack food, in 2003.
As of the writing of this article, the chef is working as a consultant chef at a South African restaurant and wine bar called Vivat Bacchus.
Then there is his television work, which he is quite famous for.
Turner worked as a resident chef on Granada Television's This Morning for many years.
He was also a regular guest cook on Ready Steady Cook on BBC2. He joined the show in 1994 while also presenting other cookery programs.
These programs included his own BBC series called Anything You Can Cook.
In more recent years, Turner has appeared in the following shows:
BBC1's Saturday Kitchen
A Taste of Britain with Janet Street-Porter (2014)
Life On A Plate (2015), and
ITV's James Martin's Saturday Morning (2021)
The chef has also appeared on Daily Cooks Challenge, a show where two cooks prepare different dishes for various celebrity guests.
Lastly, he appeared on Dictionary Corner in May 2019, on Countdown.
Throughout his career, Brian Turner has won many awards and honors. The first of these was back in 1997.
1997 was a big year for Turner as he was awarded the Craft Guild of Chef's Special Award for achievement within the industry alongside The Caterer Catey Award for Chef of the Year and the Wedgwood Award for outstanding services to the hospitality industry.
Due to his various services to the British culinary arts, Turner has been the Chairman of the Academy of Culinary Arts for over nine years now and is also the Chairman of the UK Hospitality Skills Board.
The Thames Valley University has recognized Turner by awarding him with an Honorary Professorship.
He gained this position due to his work and commitment to The London School of Tourism, Leisure, and Hospitality alongside catering education in general.
The 2000s saw Turner awarded a CBE for his services to tourism and training in the catering industry on June 15, 2002, in the Queen's Birthday Honors.
Later in the decade, in 2006, Leeds Metropolitan University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate for his services to Hospitality & Catering.
The chef is also a former alumnus of the Leeds College of Food Technology, an early predecessor College of Leeds Metropolitan University.
He closed out the 2000s with Sheffield Hallam University awarding him an Honorary Doctorate for his services to catering.
When it comes to the public consciousness, Brian Turner is often called the British culinary king, with a loyal and ardent group of fans who have stayed with him over an illustrious career spanning 50 years.
People still flock to his television shows and any Youtube videos that show his name. Many of these videos clock in thousands of views.
Regardless of the accolades and the fame, Turner has a deep love for cooking that shows even now in the twilight of his years.
